According to the Ministry of Railways, after the successful trial of the prototype sleeper Vande Bharat, it has been decided to produce nine more Vande Bharat sleeper train sets between April and December 2025. These trains will provide comfortable travel for long distance passengers.
The trial of the prototype has started
The first 16-coach Vande Bharat sleeper train has successfully passed the RDSO trial on 15 January 2025 by covering a distance of 540 km in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad section. Integral Coach Factory, Chennai completed the manufacturing of India’s first Vande Bharat sleeper train set on 17 December last year. After this, the train was brought to Kota Division and successfully tested for a short distance of 30 to 40 km for three consecutive days in the first week of last month, where it ran at a maximum speed of 180 kmph.
These could be the possible routes
The possible routes of the upcoming 10 Vande Bharat Metros could be Delhi to Mumbai, Delhi to Chennai, Delhi to Bengaluru, Delhi to Howrah, Delhi to Ranchi and Delhi to Ahmedabad. However, the routes have not been finalized yet. But the first sleeper Vande Bharat will start running soon.
Preparations to run 50 sleeper Vande Bharat
Indian Railways has placed a large order of propulsion electrics for 50 rakes of 24-coach Vande Bharat sleeper train set on 17 December 2024. The order has been placed with two major Indian manufacturers, which are likely to be ready in a time frame of 2 years. Medha will produce 33 rakes and Alstom 17 rakes. In future, full-scale production of the 24-coach Vande Bharat sleeper train will start in 2026-27. This will further strengthen India’s self-reliance in railway technology.
