Whether it is North India that has wholeheartedly accepted Allu Arjun or South India that was already a fan of his, or the global box office that is witnessing his power for the first time… ‘Pushpa 2’ is making a huge impact everywhere.
Be it the original Telugu version of ‘Pushpa 2’ or the dubbed Hindi version… in 13 days this film has broken all kinds of box office records and is proving to be a blockbuster. But do you know that even after such a huge success, there is one place where ‘Pushpa 2’ is proving to be a flop? Let us tell you how…
‘Pushpa 2’ was sold at a very high price in the market
The answer to where and how ‘Pushpa 2’ is failing is hidden in the business mathematics of the film. Everyone knows that the amount spent by the makers to make a film is called the budget. But the mathematics of a film being a hit or flop is not determined by this single figure. The most important link in getting a film to the theatres is the distributor. The distributor buys the film (or the rights to show the film) from the producer and gets the film to the theatres.
The more the distributors expect to earn from any film, the more expensive the film sells. Therefore, the real measure of a film’s success or failure is how much money it is worth for the distributor. Before the release, to create an atmosphere for ‘Pushpa 2’, the makers of the film themselves shared the data about how expensive their film was sold in the film market according to different areas. The details of the earnings from the theatrical rights of ‘Pushpa 2’ were as follows:
Andhra Pradesh / Telangana – 220 crores
- North India – 200 crores
- Tamil Nadu – 50 crores
- Karnataka – 30 crores
- Kerala – 20 crores
- Overseas – 120
- Total – 640 crores
How successful is ‘Pushpa 2’ in terms of territory?
If we look at the film’s earnings based on the purchase of theatrical rights, then till Sunday, i.e. the 11th day, Allu Arjun’s film has made a worldwide gross collection of 1400 crores instead of 640 rupees, which is enough to be called a blockbuster. But the matter is a little different when seen according to the territory.
According to Saconilk, the gross collection of the film in Andhra Pradesh-Telangana (in 11 days) was around 266 crores. Whereas the rights were sold here for 220 crores. That means the film is profitable here, but not a blockbuster. However, it will become a blockbuster in lifetime collection. Similarly, in Tamil Nadu, ‘Pushpa 2’ has made a gross collection of 65 crores instead of 50 crores.
In Karnataka, the film was sold for 30 crores, while its gross collection was more than 83 crores. This is amazing, when Allu Arjun did not even promote ‘Pushpa 2’ in Karnataka. There was no event of any kind for the film there. Allu Arjun’s film did the biggest wonder in North India where it was sold for 200 crores, but the gross collection was more than 646 crores. This wonder happened because the Hindi version of ‘Pushpa 2’ has earned a lot.
‘Pushpa 2’ slowed down in Kerala
If we see it in the same way, the theatrical rights of the film were sold in Kerala for 20 crores. While in 11 days, ‘Pushpa 2’ did a gross collection of only 17 crores here. To prove profitable in Kerala, the film needs a gross collection of about 30 crores. But the earnings of ‘Pushpa 2’ have slowed down so much that it seems impossible to reach 30 crores.
Allu Arjun has a huge fan following in Kerala. Fans call him Chetta, which means elder brother. Arjun’s films have a strong record in Kerala, just like the stars of Kerala’s domestic industry Malayalam cinema. That’s why he has also been given the nickname ‘Mallu Arjun’. But impressing the Malayali audience who watch the great content of Malayalam cinema has been a big challenge for films from other industries. And ‘Pushpa 2’ also did not receive much praise from the Malayali audience.
Moreover, Kerala is not a very big market in terms of film business. Therefore, even though the gross collection of 17 crores in 11 days of ‘Pushpa 2’ seems high compared to the average earnings of other films, this film is still moving fast towards being a flop in Kerala.
