A bad news is coming from the world’s technology industry giant Microsoft. The company has announced that it is planning to cut jobs in 2025 and will fire those employees who are not performing as per the company.

How many employees will be fired is not confirmed yet

According to a CNBC report, this decision is similar to the strategies adopted by other tech giants. A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed the move but did not say how many employees would be affected.

The spokesperson said that at Microsoft we focus on high-performance talent. We are always working to help people learn and grow. When people are not performing, we take appropriate action.

The company’s reduced workforce will be affected

According to a CNBC report, the source revealed that the layoffs would affect less than one percent of the workforce. The company often refills roles left vacant by such cuts. This means that Microsoft’s total workforce may not see a major decline. As of June 2024, the company had about 228,000 full-time employees.

Cuts were made earlier too

Microsoft had cut jobs in the gaming division. This was seen in the month of May last year. The tech giant reportedly laid off several developers including Redfall developer Arkane Austin, Hi-Fi Rush developer Tango Gameworks, Alpha Dog Studios and others.

In 2024, Microsoft sacked about 2,000 employees in its gaming division after its acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Later that year, the company had layoffs in its Azure cloud computing business. These moves reflect the tech industry’s broader trend of prioritizing efficiency and high performance as companies deal with economic uncertainties and emerging market demands.

Microsoft continues its expansion in India
Meanwhile, Microsoft continues its expansion in India. Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella recently announced an initiative to train 500,000 people in India’s rural areas in artificial intelligence (AI) skills. The program is being run in partnership with India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
