You can change the date up to 48 hours in advance

But the benefit of this facility is given to you by the Railways only when you have booked the ticket from the reservation counter.
If you have booked a ticket online, then you will not get this facility. But if you have booked an offline ticket and you want to change your travel date, then for this you will have to go to the official ticket booking counter of the railway 48 hours in advance. There you will have to take a copy of your ticket. And you will have to take a form from the railway official and fill it. After this, the journey date of your ticket will be changed.
