Ahmednagar of Maharashtra will now be known as Ahilyanagar. Maharashtra Cabinet has approved the proposal regarding this. The cabinet announced that Ahmednagar city will be named ‘Ahilyanagar’ after the 18th century Maratha queen Ahilyabai Holkar. The government’s proposal to change the name of the city was first announced by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in May last year.
Let us tell you that Ahmednagar city was named after Ahmed Nizamshah, who established the Nizamshahi dynasty and Ahmednagar city in the 15th century. If we talk about changing the names of cities of Maharashtra, then in 2022 the names of Aurangabad and Osmanabad were changed to Sambhaji Nagar and Dharashiv respectively. Aurangabad and Osmanabad were named after the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan.
The demand for changing the names of Aurangabad and Osmanabad was first made by late Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray. This demand was being raised by him for many decades. However, Uddhav Thackeray had decided to change these names in his last cabinet meeting as Chief Minister before the fall of his government. However, Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) allies Congress and NCP were reportedly not happy with this decision. This decision was passed by the state cabinet.
