Amar Singh Chamkila Review: Diljit Dosanjh shines as 'Chamkila', Imtiaz Ali makes him 'Rockstar' on OTT

Amar Singh Chamkila has been released on Netflix. Imtiaz Ali is known for musical films and Amar Singh Chamkila is the best film made under his direction. Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra have played the lead roles. The story of the film is a biopic of singer-composer Amar Singh Chamkila, known as the rockstar of Punjab, who was shot dead.

The name of Amar Singh Chamkila is very important in the history of Punjabi music. His tunes stirred the souls of millions, but his music was considered inferior due to its double entendre and obscene lyrics. Because of this a section was also angry with him.

Chamkila and his second wife Amarjot were shot dead in public during a live performance. At that time Chamkila was only 27 years old.

The mystery of his murder remained unsolved. 36 years after Chamkila’s murder, Imtiaz Ali has made the film Amar Singh Chamkila on his life. The film depicts his life struggle from being a Dalit laborer to becoming a great singer.

Chamkila’s story begins with murder
The story begins in Mehsampur, where a crowd of hundreds is waiting for Chamkila (Diljit Dosanjh) and Amarjot (Parineeti Chopra). Both get down from the car. Suddenly, Amarjot is shot on the forehead and before Chamkila understands anything, he is also killed.

There is chaos everywhere. From there the layers of Chamkila’s life begin to unravel. Then he is not bright but Dhaniram. The rich man who works in a socks factory is a music lover. Incidents of entering the world of music, singing with different female singers and then associating with Amarjot, getting the stage name Chamkila and performing fearlessly despite receiving death threats over allegations of dirty songs after success. Let’s come.

Chamkila also sang devotional based songs, about which very few people know. That is also mentioned. This story, moving from present to past, is narrated by Chamkila’s close friends.

Society dazzled by the glitter of glitter
Imtiaz Ali, the master of love stories, has touched the life of Amar Singh Chamkila very closely. He has worked in depth on the environment of Chamkila. The film does nothing to burnish Chamkila’s image by taking into account her double entendres, which had earned her and her audience the status of a ‘dirty guy’ by the self-appointed watchdogs of the society.

However, it is a sharp commentary on the society of that period, with a touch of glitter. Imtiaz, along with script developers Nidhi Sethia and Richa Nanda, focuses on Chamkila’s life and the impact of militancy in Punjab during the 1980s. Not much information has been given about his wife Amarjot.

The aspect of Amarjot’s second marriage in the film is shocking. There the bright ones lose a little sympathy. The side of the first wife has also been shown superficially. The real stage performance scenes of Amar and Amarjot are shown in a comparative manner with Diljit and Parineeti. So that both can connect with their real life.

His songs were typical Punjabi. In such a situation, for the audience unaware of this language, the meaning of the lyrics of the songs is written in Hindi. Music is an important part of the film.

The good thing is that Imtiaz and Rehman have not tampered with the original songs of Chamkila. The old memories have remained intact for his fans. Apart from the original songs, AR Rahman has retained the flavor of Amar Singh Chamkila’s music in his original compositions with lyricist Irshad Kamil.

Diljit won hearts
The credit for making the film visible on screen goes to Diljit Dosanjh , who has made Amar Singh Chamkila’s love for music, struggle and fearlessness completely believable. He leaves no stone unturned in illuminating the scene. His performance is amazing.

Parineeti suits the role of shy, quiet and polite Amarjot. However, his character needed to be shown in a little more depth. Diljit and Parineeti’s live performance on the songs of Chamkila and Amarjot is also fantastic. Actor Anjum Batra’s work as Kesar Singh Tikki is noteworthy. He is remembered for his excellent comic timing and emotional scenes.

The good thing is that considering Chamkila ‘s controversial life, the film neither glorifies her nor justifies her actions. This film will be counted among Imtiaz’s best films
