Air Fare Hike: The proposed fee hike at Delhi airport may increase the domestic airfare by 1.5-2%. A slight increase in international fares is also possible. The new charges may come into effect from April 1, 2024, which will put an additional financial burden on passengers.
Air Fare Hike: Those who travel by air should now get ready for an expensive journey. Air fare is going to increase. Due to the proposed fee hike at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), passengers may have to spend more money for air travel. According to Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), due to the increase in tariff, domestic air fare may increase by 1.5% to 2% and international fare by about 1%.
Reason for fee hike?
Delhi International Airport Limited has proposed a revision in the User Development Fee (UDF) charged from airlines and passengers. Under this proposal, the Per Passenger Receipt (YPP) may increase from the current Rs 145 to Rs 370. Currently the User Development Fee is only Rs 77 per passenger, which will be increased and implemented under the new framework.
Impact on passengers’ pockets
- Domestic air fare: May increase by 1.5% to 2%.
- International fares: Less than 1% increase possible
- New tariff slab: 30% airline fee and 70% passenger fee
- Increase compared to 2006: About 140% increase.
When will the new fee be implemented?
This proposal of Delhi International Airport Limited has been submitted to the Airport Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA). If approved, this new tariff slab will be applicable from April 1, 2024 to March 31, 2029.
Growing needs of Delhi Airport
Delhi Airport handles the movement of about 10.9 crore passengers annually. In view of the increasing crowd and demand for modern facilities, a proposal has been made to increase the fee. However, this has increased the possibility of travel becoming expensive for the passengers. Passengers will have to be prepared for this change. If the proposal is approved, the cost of air travel may be higher than before.
