According to the notification issued by DPOT on December 9, Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra will be the next RBI Governor for a period of three years. Sanjay Malhotra will take over from the current RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das on December 11. Malhotra has previously served as the Chairman and Managing Director of the government company REC.

His expertise extends to public finance, energy reform, and economic administration. His leadership in the Revenue Department will be seen as important experience for stepping into a new role as the Governor of the central bank.

King of the Rs 3 lakh crore power distribution reform!

Earlier, Malhotra was the Secretary in the Department of Financial Services, where he handled key reforms and policy decisions in the banking and financial sectors. He also served as Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Power, where he was involved in implementing the Rs 3 lakh crore power distribution reform.

He is the ex-officio secretary of the GST Council. He has played a key role in achieving the recent surge in tax collections. He will consider tax-related proposals for the budget. Malhotra is an IIT-Kanpur alumnus and also holds a master’s degree in public policy from Princeton University, US. Reacting to the development, former statistician Pranab Sen told CNBC-TV18 that he was “a little surprised, but not entirely.” Finance ministry bureaucrats have been in the RBI, so I am not very surprised.
